Styling Your Space: Table Tops

Styling Your Space: Table Tops

Tray Styling

More times than often, the surfaces around our homes become a dumping ground for all sorts of clutter. In order for our spaces to feel more relaxing, we should always try to clear our surrounding surfaces, and organise our belongings. This can be done, whilst adding decor pieces and styling them to create a beautiful space.

.

Trays are always helpful when organising decor pieces, and other necessary items. They are often a staple item in homes, restaurants and even offices. The way we use trays has changed a lot over the years. They are now mostly used to store items, rather than serve off them. This means that they can now be beautiful and functional. Here are a few examples of trays on table tops, and how to style them.

Arranging Vases

Many of us fall victim to storing our vases away in cupboard, never to see the light of day (until a fresh bunch of flowers come along). This should not be the case. Vases are often crucial in a design, as they help fill up voids, and draw attention to the room.

.

When styling vases, we can often follow the rule of thirds. This is a simple, yet effective trick to help when placing items. Try and gather three vases, of three different shapes and sizes (tall, medium and short). You can now arrange them with the tallest at the back, the medium off to the side, and the small at the front. Place some real or faux plants in, and you have a beautiful display.

Other Styling Tips

There are so many different ways to style your table tops, and we would never be able to go over them all in this blog post. Here are a few helpful tips and ideas to work with when you next style your tables.

.

  • Try to combine various textures, but keeping them within a certain colour palette.
  • Use trinket boxes to store necessary, but not necessarily pretty items, such as keys, alarms and so forth.
  • When stacking books, place a decor item on top. This could be a sculpture, or wooden item to tie in with the rest of your decor.
  • Try to combine natural and synthetic objects together, to create an interesting, yet beautiful space.

Shelving

Storage Solutions

Storage Solutions

Built in Cabinetry

One struggle that homeowners constantly seem to struggle with is: storage solutions. Depending on the size of your home, there may not be tons of space for storage, but we have some tips on how to help. Let’s get started shall we?

.

The first, and best way to combat a lack of storage is to create new ones. This can be done by adding built in cabinetry, what we sometimes call: BIC. We taylor make cabinetry to suit your every need, and house the items that you need to be stored. There are so many finishes that can be applied to your cabinetry, and we have a blog post on that here. We also have some other tips on how to organise your home here.

Shelving

If built in cabinetry is way out of your budget, or if you have spacial constraints shelving may be the way to go. Floating shelving is a beautiful way to display and store your items. However, heavier items may not be suitable for these kinds of shelves.

.

Shelving with brackets is a better way to store heavier items. If you are worried about bulky, ugly brackets, fear not! There are so many different and new bracket styles on the market. Placing baskets on your shelves to hide clutter, is a great way to utilise space, but we will speak more about that in the next section.

Baskets

Incorporating woven baskets in your space will help you hide clutter, as well as bring in more natural materials into your space. Baskets are super easy to bring in and out of a cupboard or shelf, as well as lightweight. This makes them good for children’s rooms too. Purchasing baskets from a decor store can become quite expensive, however, we often have them custom made for your space. This can help lower the price, and make sure that they fit perfectly.

Mosaics and Tiles

Shower Feature Walls

Shower Feature Walls

Tiles & Mosaics

The days are long gone where showers are shoved into a small corner, with no detailing! An inviting shower is a must-have for relaxation after a long day at work, or for those mornings where you are in a rush. There are a few simple, yet effective ways to take your shower to the next level. Carry on reading to find out how!

.

The first way is to add a feature wall with tiles or mosaics. Pebbles are another great feature to add to your shower wall or floor. There are so many different tile options on the market, and millions of more designs to use. If you would like to see some custom tile cutting, follow this link to our blog post. If you would like your feature wall to pop, using colour can easily achieve this. Hand-made tiles offer great texture, and glazing can add a gorgeous shine.

Windows

Let the light in! Imagine being able to look out at nature when you are in your show. Feels serene right? This can be achieved by adding a simple window to your shower. Depending on the positioning of your room, you might not want the whole world to see you in the shower. However, this can be fixed by adding a high, but a narrow window.

.

Or if you would prefer a larger window, the glass can easily be frosted to prevent anyone from seeing you. A gap can be left at the top so you are still able to look outside. Depending on how high the window is from the ground, it could also be a great way to store your cleaning products. This leads us to the next important item: storage.

Storage

You may or may not be a culprit of having one too many shampoo or body wash bottles. However, you always need more space for storage. Storage can sometimes become an afterthought, and we end up buying steel, screw-in racks that rusts to pieces.

.

Storage should not be an afterthought! When building a new shower, one has the opportunity to incorporate beautiful ideas. This can take the form of an inset, that could be tiles the same as the rest of the shower. It could even be tiled a different way. This would make the space pop. Shelves are also a great way to have more space for your bottles, soaps and brushes. Hooks will also help to store loofas and facecloths. Click here to see our blog post on plumbing fittings.

Adding Warmth to Your Home - Fireplace

Adding Warmth to Your Home

Adding Warmth to Your Home

Rugs

Before I started this blog post, I sat and shivered because of the cold spell we are currently having in Durban. Luckily, I live by my own advice, and found some great ways to warm up. By reading this blog post, you too, should have some simple and good ways to bring warmth to your home.

.

The first way is to introduce rugs into your space. Fluffy and soft, or natural and hard wearing, a rug is a perfect way to help bring warmth to your space. Why stand on cold hard tiles whilst brushing your teeth on crisp mornings, when your toes could be warm instead. This goes the same for a kitchen. Some might think it impractical to have a rug in the kitchen, but can be very helpful to warm you up, whilst providing comfort.

Throws

Feeling cold while watching your favourite Netflix show? No problem! By adding a few throws to your space, whenever you feel a chill, simply throw on, well, a throw!

.

Throws are a great way to soften a space, as well as adding warmth when needed. There is a wide variety of throws on the market, as well as fabrics to have your own manufactured. There will be dozens to suit your space, and we could easily help you find the right ones. These will help bring pattern, colour and excitement to your space. Or if you prefer, neutral throws. They will always be helpful, and when not in use, there are various ways to store them. Roll them up and pop them in a basket, throw them over your bed or sofa, or just fold them up and put away in a cupboard.

Heating

Other ways to bring warmth to your space, is by adding a fireplace, underfloor heating, portable heaters, or even heated towel rails. These are just a few examples, but there are many on the market. Here is a link to our Outdoor Fire Pit post or our Fireplace Design post which are both bursting with inspiration.

.

As you can see in the following images, it is possible to have a fireplace in nearly every room in the house. This could be the bathroom, bedroom, living room or even dining room. Remember, there are options as to what type of fireplace you can have, which you can find out more about here.

Adding Detail to Your Walls

Adding Detail to Your Walls – Panelling

Adding Detail to Your Walls - Panelling

Half Walls – Wainscoting

If your walls need a makeover, or if you have been dreaming of detailed walls in your space, this is the post for you. Adding panelling to your walls can liven up the space, whilst adding interest and detailing. There is no need for your walls to stay blank.

.

Wainscoting is merely a fancy name for adding paneling to a section of your wall, the most popular of which would be the bottom half. This normally consists of a baseboard, which attaches onto the floor and the wall. As well as the panelling, with a chair rail on the top to finish off the design. The panelling can be painted white or any colour you desire. Add in a pop of gold for some extra opulence.

Full Wall – Panel Molding

Panel molding reaches above the typical chair rail height and can even cover the entire wall. It can also be applied to the ceiling and can consist of either solid panels or separate trim pieces put together to create different designs and patterns.” – Marnie Oursler

.

This type of panelling can look exquisite and opulent when painted in rich or bold colours. If left white, it can also add beautiful detailing to the wall. There are so many different types of folding, and ways to apply them. Adding wallpaper inside the molding can also add more detail and interest to the space.

Modern Panelling

If you are not sold by the more traditional styles of molding, the following images are examples of how molding can be applied in a modern way.

.

By applying the panels in geometric shapes, the room instantly looks more modern. The great thing about panelling is that is can be placed in nearly any room. Master bedroom, bathroom, living or dining room, or even the nursery! With so many patterns, layouts and colours to paint them, panelling is a great design tool to help make your space more elegant and magazine worthy.

Outdoor Fire Pits - Fire pits

Outdoor Fire Pits

Outdoor Fire Pits

The Firepit

The days are becoming shorter, whilst the nights are becoming longer, and more crisp. What could be a better way to relax and unwind than snuggling up next to a warm and cozy fire pit? This is a great idea to fill an empty void in your garden, whilst providing you with seating and of course warmth for those chilly evenings.

.

When choosing a fire pit for your space, there are a few factors to consider. Would you like your pit to be cast in situ, or would you like it to be moveable? There are various type of fires that you could use. There are wood burners, gas or even more modern and eco-friendly types of pits. This will depend on the style of your space, the size you have to work with, as well as your fire preference. Here are some beautiful fire pits to get you inspired for your space.

Seating

Seating will form an important part to your space. There are so many different ways you could have your seating area. From built in deck type seating, with upholstered cushions, to concrete seating. You could have a square or rectangular setup, or even a rounded set up. This will all depend on how many people you wish to cater for, as well as your style.

.

Safety will form an important part of the design, as fires, when not controlled or built properly could be detrimental. This is why it is best to have a designer who will follow safety standards and precautions to keep you and your family safe.

Other Parts to the Design

There are other aspects to the design, such as lighting, flooring, fabrics and possibly a roofing structure. This will also depend on your style, space allowance and budget. These add ons will take the design up a notch, and will have your guests in awe!

.

When it comes to fabrics, an outdoor fabric would be the best to use in the space. They are UV resistant and won’t be damaged by sun rays. Outdoor vinyls will be waterproof and won’t need to be taken inside. What a joy! We have so many different options for you, ranging from bold patterns and gorgeous textures.

Finding the Perfect Plumbing Fittings

Finding the Perfect Plumbing Fittings

Glittering Gold

Choosing the right plumbing fixtures for your bathroom can often seem like a daunting task… Luckily, that is what I am here for! This blog post is filled with all sorts of fixtures that could be perfect for your space. This will depend on the colour scheme, style and the overall theme you are going for in your bathroom. The first style we will be looking at is gold.

.

If you are looking to add some glamour to your bathroom, gold can do just that. The following images all have different types of gold mixers, taps, shower heads and even a shower drain fitting. If you would like to steer clear of the standard stainless steel, and bring in a wow-factor into your bathroom, gold would be the perfect finish for you.

Black is the new Black

Now you might be a little bit hesitant at the thought of black plumbing fixtures in your space, the following might just change your mind. Whether you are going for ultra modern, or looking to add some contrast to your space: incorporating black fixtures into your bathroom will definitely elevate the design.

.

Whilst most black fittings come in a matt finish, there are some that have a sheen, which adds a hint of shine. Black plumbing fixtures are becoming more available as the demand grows. This is because they can work well in various spaces, and help your space stand out from the rest. Have a look at the following images and let your imagination run wild!

Other Noteworthy Styles

I have compiled a few other noteworthy options, which are all unique in their own way. Rose gold is a very popular finish at the moment, and very on trend. There is even a swan faucet if you are looking for something unique.

Living brass is a type of brass that will change over time, which brings a whole new look to the space. They age beautifully, and add character to the space. Pink Affairs - A Moodboard Feature Image

Pink Affairs – A Moodboard

Pink Affairs - A Moodboard

Pink Affairs - A Moodboard
About the Moodboard

This week, we released our first IGTV video! We created a moodboard filled with various fabrics, wall coverings and other textures. This was a new and fun venture for us, as we had never done anything like it before. We are hoping to create a series of video mood boards to showcase different interior textures from various fabric houses. It will be super informative as you will get to see how we put together different schemes, whilst using such a variation of colours and textures. We will then release a blog post, just like this one, where we will add in various inspiration images, and furniture to go with the moodboard. We hope you enjoy this as much as we enjoyed making it! This week, I used the theme: “Pink Affairs”, and you can find out more about it in the link at the end of this blog post.

.

In our video, which is linked below, you will notice that I spoke about incorporating natural elements, such as shell or grasscloth. The following images are of light fittings that would work beautifully in a space with our moodboard scheme. The shell light fittings incorporate gold, which I spoke about in the video. Gold adds a touch of glamour to the space, and incorporates a new texture. Shell will catch the light so wonderfully, creating a pattern of its’ own.

Incorporating Shell

We can’t wait to create more moodboards to inspire you!

Home Bar Design - Seating

Home Bar Design

Cabinetry

You may be dreaming of having your own bar at home – or you could be lucky enough to already own one. Either way, this post will inspire you with various elements of a home bar design. From cabinetry design to lighting, your bar could be a space you would never want to leave!

.

When designing a bar, cabinetry is one of the main elements of the design. You need somewhere to store your drinks, equipment, as well as a countertop to work on. There are so many different kinds of cabinetry materials. From veneer, to solid wood doors, or doors wrapped in metal, there is something for everyone. This is the same when it comes to the countertop. Depending on your space, there are countless possibilities. Luckily, this is what we specialise in, and would love to help you.

Seating

Now that you have your beautiful cabinetry and countertops, you will need some seating. Then you will be able to sit back, relax and sip on your drink. Depending on the size of your bar area, you might be able to have bar seating, lounge seating, or even both.

.

The following images have tons of inspiration for your barstools or lounge seating. The style and design will depend on the style of your bar. We are able to custom design and manufacture the bar furniture of your dreams!

Lighting

Lighting will form an important part of your design. There are various forms of lighting, depending on the application. Most bars rely on ambient lighting, to set the mood. This could be in the form of soft, strip lights within your cabinetry. A fun way to add lights to your space is by having LED lights that take the form of words, or other designs to suit your space.

.

Down-lights, pendants and wall sconces can also form part of your bar design. The following images will give you tons of lighting inspiration.

Decorate for Easter

Decorating for Easter: DIY Style

Centrepiece

The good news is that it is Easter Weekend! The bad news – our country is still in lockdown. Therefore you might not have had a chance to do your usual Easter preparations. Fear not! We have found you some simple yet beautiful ways to decorate your Easter table: DIY style.

.

Why settle for a plain, usual table setting? By DIY’ing your centrepiece, you will end up with a lovely feature, one that you can be proud of! By poking two holes at either side of an egg, you can blow the whites and yolk out. You can still use the insides to make your scrambled eggs or omelettes. Once you have washed the eggs, it is time to get creative.

.

Paint your eggs to match your desired colour theme. Use patterns and textures to create cute designs on your eggs. String them up onto some dried branches in a vase, and you have your centrepiece done! Another good way to create this without using eggs, is to use paper or cardboard.

Place Setting

By using your existing crockery and cutlery, and adding a DIY element, you can turn your style into nearly any setting. This could be Halloween, Christmas or in this case: Easter.

.

By using the same method in the centrepiece, you can create Easter eggs. These can then be incorporated into your place setting. You could wrap the napkin around the egg to make a bunny. You could place the egg in a bed of twine, or simply put the egg on the napkin. The possibilities are endless.

Other Ideas

There are so many other ideas out there, but this post would be way too long if we had to include them all. You could paint some Easter bunnies or any other related images onto paper or fabric, and frame them.

.

Another idea is to enclose your Easter memorabilia into a jar and display it on your table. Grab some painted eggs, put them into a basket with flowers on top. Remember, there are so many things you could DIY without having to step out your home.

Stay safe and have a Happy Easter!
