About the Space

The word “lifeless” might come to mind when looking at the before images of this entrance and foyer. But that was before we got our hands on it. This entrance and foyer was lacking life and colour, but we managed to turn that around during this renovation. It is generally known that darker paint colours tend to make rooms see smaller than they are, while lighter colours make rooms seem bigger than what they actually. The same goes for different types of wallpapers in which certain ones may make a room seem smaller, whereas others make a room seem bigger. To some, a patterned wallpaper can seem like a huge risk, but they can really add a ton of character and personality to a space. This double volume space was perfect for a patterned, vertically striped wallpaper.

.

As you may know by reading our previous blog posts and seeing our previous work… We LOVE to use greenery indoors. We actually have a whole blog post dedicated to it! If you would like to read more about that, click here. We added some potted plants to add some greenery and bring life into the space. The piano fitted perfectly into the space and will provide for hours of music and fun. The music will carry beautifully up into the double volume space. We decorated the upstairs landing and foyer with a light wood dark table. This was finished off with an array of hand picked vases, greenery and a lantern. Not only is the lantern beautiful, but will also help with the pesky ‘load shedding!’ Our clients are greeted with an entrance and landing that will always make them smile, and feel instantly relaxed.

About the Space

Space was the biggest constraint of this apartment. Although a new build, it was a spec home that we needed to design around. Today we are showcasing the open plan living area. The client wanted the colour palette to be neutrals, which a pop of colour and glam. We installed a statement wallpaper behind the tv with a metallic detail to liven up the space. There needed to be seating, however there was not enough room for 6 chairs. Therefore we opted for a dining table, 3 chairs and a custom bench seat. The mirrored doors added a hint of opulence and made the room feel larger and more open.

.

The deep buttoned sofa was an excellent choice to bring in a level of sophistication, whilst not losing any comfort. We added in some bright scatters along with a metallic fabric to tie the space and tones together. If you look around the room, you will find various gold accents. These can be found in the form of handles, decor, and even the coffee tables. The layout of the space was the best choice in order to have maximum seating, without feeling crowded. Last but not least, the beautiful, large jute rug ties in the lounge to the dining room. Furthermore, it adds in that hint of natural textures that we know and love!

Concrete

Ceiling Design

Finding the Perfect Plumbing Fittings

Timber Ceilings

Ceiling design plays a major role in any interior space. They make up a large part of a room, and add to the overall effectiveness of the space. Therefore, in this post, we will show you various types of ceilings, to help you find inspiration for your next project.

.

First of all we have timber ceilings. Adding timber to your ceilings can bring warmth and natural tones into the space. Sometimes, timber beams form a part of the structure of a home. You are able to use these structural items as design elements. Other times, plain ceilings can be transformed with the use of “faux” (false) beams, which are simply put in as decor elements. The following pictures show ceilings with faux timber beams, structural timber beams, and other designed timber elements.

Concrete Ceilings

Concrete ceilings need to be designed into a new build project. Due to their weight, they would not be able to be added afterwards. However, you would be able to get a faux concrete look with the use of paint techniques or screed.

.

Concrete can be used to achieve a modern, industrial look, and helps to add contrast and interest to a space. Exposed concrete has become increasingly popular in homes and office spaces. It can pair well with various styles and designs. Therefore it is a good choice. In addition, depending on the look you are aiming to achieve, the concrete can be buffed for a smooth, sleek look. Alternatively, the concrete can be left for a raw and dramatic effect. You can read our post on off-shutter concrete here.

Bulkhead Ceilings

Making up the majority of homes and other interior spaces, drop ceilings, or bulkheads are very popular. Often left white, this is a “go to” look for many homeowners. This ceiling design can match nearly any design style, are fairly easy to install, and can be changed fairly easily too. This does not mean that they need to be boring though.

.

The following images have different styles of bulkheads. From modern to contemporary, each ceiling has depth to it. Step ups, step downs, curves and straight paths, there is nothing standard about these. Furthermore, adding lights can add interest to the ceilings. You can also choose to paint different parts of the ceilings, which creates depth, contrast and interest. Therefore the possibilities are endless!

Mosaics and Tiles

Shower Feature Walls

Shower Feature Walls

Tiles & Mosaics

The days are long gone where showers are shoved into a small corner, with no detailing! An inviting shower is a must-have for relaxation after a long day at work, or for those mornings where you are in a rush. There are a few simple, yet effective ways to take your shower to the next level. Carry on reading to find out how!

.

The first way is to add a feature wall with tiles or mosaics. Pebbles are another great feature to add to your shower wall or floor. There are so many different tile options on the market, and millions of more designs to use. If you would like to see some custom tile cutting, follow this link to our blog post. If you would like your feature wall to pop, using colour can easily achieve this. Hand-made tiles offer great texture, and glazing can add a gorgeous shine.

Windows

Let the light in! Imagine being able to look out at nature when you are in your show. Feels serene right? This can be achieved by adding a simple window to your shower. Depending on the positioning of your room, you might not want the whole world to see you in the shower. However, this can be fixed by adding a high, but a narrow window.

.

Or if you would prefer a larger window, the glass can easily be frosted to prevent anyone from seeing you. A gap can be left at the top so you are still able to look outside. Depending on how high the window is from the ground, it could also be a great way to store your cleaning products. This leads us to the next important item: storage.

Storage

You may or may not be a culprit of having one too many shampoo or body wash bottles. However, you always need more space for storage. Storage can sometimes become an afterthought, and we end up buying steel, screw-in racks that rusts to pieces.

.

Storage should not be an afterthought! When building a new shower, one has the opportunity to incorporate beautiful ideas. This can take the form of an inset, that could be tiles the same as the rest of the shower. It could even be tiled a different way. This would make the space pop. Shelves are also a great way to have more space for your bottles, soaps and brushes. Hooks will also help to store loofas and facecloths. Click here to see our blog post on plumbing fittings.

Adding Detail to Your Walls

Adding Detail to Your Walls – Panelling

Adding Detail to Your Walls - Panelling

Half Walls – Wainscoting

If your walls need a makeover, or if you have been dreaming of detailed walls in your space, this is the post for you. Adding panelling to your walls can liven up the space, whilst adding interest and detailing. There is no need for your walls to stay blank.

.

Wainscoting is merely a fancy name for adding paneling to a section of your wall, the most popular of which would be the bottom half. This normally consists of a baseboard, which attaches onto the floor and the wall. As well as the panelling, with a chair rail on the top to finish off the design. The panelling can be painted white or any colour you desire. Add in a pop of gold for some extra opulence.

Full Wall – Panel Molding

Panel molding reaches above the typical chair rail height and can even cover the entire wall. It can also be applied to the ceiling and can consist of either solid panels or separate trim pieces put together to create different designs and patterns.” – Marnie Oursler

.

This type of panelling can look exquisite and opulent when painted in rich or bold colours. If left white, it can also add beautiful detailing to the wall. There are so many different types of folding, and ways to apply them. Adding wallpaper inside the molding can also add more detail and interest to the space.

Modern Panelling

If you are not sold by the more traditional styles of molding, the following images are examples of how molding can be applied in a modern way.

.

By applying the panels in geometric shapes, the room instantly looks more modern. The great thing about panelling is that is can be placed in nearly any room. Master bedroom, bathroom, living or dining room, or even the nursery! With so many patterns, layouts and colours to paint them, panelling is a great design tool to help make your space more elegant and magazine worthy.

Glittering Gold

Choosing the right plumbing fixtures for your bathroom can often seem like a daunting task… Luckily, that is what I am here for! This blog post is filled with all sorts of fixtures that could be perfect for your space. This will depend on the colour scheme, style and the overall theme you are going for in your bathroom. The first style we will be looking at is gold.

.

If you are looking to add some glamour to your bathroom, gold can do just that. The following images all have different types of gold mixers, taps, shower heads and even a shower drain fitting. If you would like to steer clear of the standard stainless steel, and bring in a wow-factor into your bathroom, gold would be the perfect finish for you.

Black is the new Black

Now you might be a little bit hesitant at the thought of black plumbing fixtures in your space, the following might just change your mind. Whether you are going for ultra modern, or looking to add some contrast to your space: incorporating black fixtures into your bathroom will definitely elevate the design.

Whilst most black fittings come in a matt finish, there are some that have a sheen, which adds a hint of shine. Black plumbing fixtures are becoming more available as the demand grows. This is because they can work well in various spaces, and help your space stand out from the rest. Have a look at the following images and let your imagination run wild!

Other Noteworthy Styles

I have compiled a few other noteworthy options, which are all unique in their own way. Rose gold is a very popular finish at the moment, and very on trend. There is even a swan faucet if you are looking for something unique.

Living brass is a type of brass that will change over time, which brings a whole new look to the space. They age beautifully, and add character to the space. Bringing in antique fittings can add a bit of history to your space. If you are looking for an ultra-modern, state of the art bathroom, there are many fixtures which can help accomplish this. Organize your home

Every day is a great day to get your home organized. There are many ways to organize your home, here are a few tips that we have picked up along the way.

INFORMATION CENTER

Information centres where post, papers and magazines can be collected, prevent piles from collecting on flat surfaces. A great idea is to make this centre your entrance table as this is generally where things would get dumped.

Make your entrance table multi-functional with storage for older papers or spare keys. It isn’t enough to just have a table where these things are collected, include trays, boxes, pen holders. You will find that things have a designated spot and can be put away.

For example, keys that we all lose and have to search for before we go to work.

GALLERY WALL

We all love our picture frame collection, but it does take up surface area and can look unorganised. Consider wall mounting your pictures and creating a gallery wall instead. You are creating a feature out of your clutter but maintaining all the memories.

CABLE MANAGEMENT

One other major contributor to clutter, is the cabling that lies around. We all have it. There are many ways to hide these cables. For example, Multi plugs are made to mounted onto walls or even underneath your TV unit, sideboard or desk even. Cable management systems can be bought at most hypermarkets and prove to be very effective. Cables collect dust and look untidy when they lay around on the floor.

It can be daunting to organize your home but it is well worth it in the end. A clean, organized home is a good, happy home.

With a beautifully designed outdoor space. This space could become your second living space.

Whether you have a closed veranda or an exposed poolside lounge area, that you never seem to utilise, we can help. Theses spaces can be so much more than just a cold steel 2 seater bench. Fully upholstered sofas, dining tables and chairs are all suitable if done correctly.

There are a few key elements that create the right feel for this space. Lighting is one of them. Many people think that because it is outdoors that they can not have beautiful lighting. There are so many different option theses days with regards to outdoor lighting and even just unique ways in which to incorporate garden lighting to create the magical feel in our own back yard.

The next element is obviously furniture. With the wide range of outdoor furniture and fabrics that we have today, there is no limit to what we can do in a space. With the fully upholstered furniture, the outdoor fabrics are made to handle the sun and the outdoor conditions but covers can be made for theses pieces. This ensures that there is no hassle with having to move furniture back indoors and out of the rain.

MINIMALIST DESIGN

Minimalism often has a sterile connotation to it. But real minimalist design can be beautiful if done correctly.

Minimalist design is simple, sophisticated, uncluttered and mostly monochromatic. Colour would be used as accents as opposed to features. Minimalist design utilises open plan living spaces. This allows light to spread through the areas freely. This creates an even uninterrupted feeling through the space.

True minimalism will not only ensure a comfortable, clean feel but will highlight the true nature of the architecture around it as there are not many distractions. Often it is used in spaces that are architecturally interesting as this way the building gets the attention that is deserves.

Minimalist homes can be simple and well designed, not boring. In kitchens it is as simple as taking the built in cupboard fittings to the ceiling allowing an uninterrupted view as well as utilising the space to its fullest. In a living room we then have the opportunity to pick out good comfortable furniture, that allows us what we need in a space. As opposed to all the added knick-knacks that we would ordinarily buy, to make a space feel fuller.

Theses solutions are functional and are the essence of what we need. Having a well design minimalist space allows us to truly make things stand out where they need to.

Minimalist homes can often feel cold and uninviting but with a good design this can be avoided. We would introduce wood and jute into spaces to give the space warmth. We find that a play on different textures creates interest and a great between spaces.

EFFECTIVE TILE CUTTING

We are all so very used to buying a tile and putting it up on the wall or floor.  Many people don’t think much of it from there. A tile can be so much more than just a square or rectangle.

Cutting a tile into unique shapes which are then place together to create a splash back or an accent wall can entirely transform a space. Doing more with a tile shows consideration for a space than just placing ordinary tiles.

Tiles do not have to be restricted to areas that get wet or even to homes. Accent walls can be tiled and where in a home, restaurant or office. Doing accent walls in tiles is more durable and can be more effective than paint or wallpaper.

No need to even stress about buying a specific tile to be cut, you can use the same tile as the rest of the bathroom and just have it cut into your chosen design. This way your scheme stays the same just with a little extra thought put into it.

This concept may be fulfilled by mosaic tiles but what if they do not have the design that you are looking for? What if you are looking for a geometric style tile that you found on Pinterest and they have in Europe but you can’t get it here. That is the beauty of tile cutting. Less hassle and more effective.
