THE HERITAGE HOME IN HILTON

We have been hired to redecorate a house in Hilton. This home will incorporate elements from a Zimbabwean heritage. The home originally contained elements such as furniture and decor that was originally from Zimbabwe. These pieces were sentimental and were memories from the past therefore we decided to keep these elements. We planned to decorate the home subsequently to compliment these heritage pieces.

As you can see from the mood boards below, the home will take on a contemporary, yet rustic feel. This theme ties in perfectly with the Zimbabwean elements that will be kept in the design. The renders above depict how the home is intended to look by the end of the design work. The colour scheme will consist of earthy colours, such as neutrals and a pop of navy blue. Materials that will be used will be natural, such as wooden items.

.

The rooms include:

.

  • an inside TV lounge
  • a dining room
  • living room
  • outdoor braai area
  • an outdoor deck area
  • a lady cave office space.

NURSERY DESIGN

Are you looking to decorate your nursery but have absolutely no idea where to begin? Look no further! This blog post will help you find inspiration, and inform you of how to achieve the perfect nursery for your little one.

Colour Palettes

Traditionally, nurseries would be designed in bright colours, such as blues, pinks and greens. This however, does not always provide a calm and nurturing environment. We suggest sticking to a muted colour palette, including greys, whites and pastels. Once you have chosen a colour theme, you are now ready to start choosing furniture.

Furniture.

Nurseries need to include all the necessary furniture to nurse a baby, however, the furniture does not need to be standard or clinical. A nursery would need to include:

Crib:

Nursing chair:

Changing station:

Storage…lots and lots of storage

Lighting.

Lighting is a big part of nursery design. The space should not be too bright, and should create a calming environment. Natural light should be utilised as much as possible, and block out curtains are a great way to block out light when needed. Below are a few examples of nurseries that have used lighting correctly.

Add a little fun!

Wall murals are a great way to add a quirky and creative element into the design. These can be in the form of wallpapers or even painted designs. (see murals post)

Accessorise.

Bring out your inner child! Accessories are another great way to incorporate quirky elements into the space. Below are a few examples of toys, murals and other accessories which will help create a beautiful and stimulating environment for your little one.

A MODERN GUIDE TO ART DECO

Art Deco is a form of design that keeps popping up time and time again. It is an art period that originated in Paris and New York during the late 1920’s and 1930’s. It then took the world by storm as countries adopted the principals and incorporated it into their design industries such as fashion design, interior design, architecture and graphic design.

Art Deco is characterised by its use of geometric shapes and patterns, bold colours and use of expensive materials such as jade, silver, ivory, chrome, and rock crystals. Here are a few ways to incorporate the style into your home, without breaking the bank!

1) Through the use of Colour

The following images incorporate various Art Deco colours such as the pinks and turquoises. By bringing in furniture, paints and tiles, this can be an inexpensive way to bring Art Deco into your space.

2) Through the use of wallpapers

One of the most simple and beautiful ways to incorporate Art Deco into your space is through the use of various wallpapers. The following images contain wallpapers that bring in the Art Deco element into the space.

3) Furniture!

As we know, there are many different types of furniture. Art Deco furniture does not have to be antique or vintage to be considered as Art Deco, it may also be modern, such as the images below.

4) ACCESSORIES, ACCESSORIES, ACCESSORIES!

Accessories are KEY when decorating your space in the Art Deco style. These can range from bigger items such as Art Deco duvet covers, to smaller items such as cushions and light switch covers.

MODERN MURALS, WE APPROVE!

Back in the day dressing your walls was one of 2 options, paint or wallpaper. Nowadays there are so many different styles, you can clad the wall in timber or a textured stone tile even. You can still go the option of wallpaper or paint but even there, there are many ways to achieve the feature you want. Today we are looking at the idea of wall murals and how to create a feature in your home by using a large scale printed images.

There are a few ways this can be applied but the most popular would be in a wallpaper application. Many fabric and wallpaper houses now fabricate large scale images in up to 5 panels wide, creating the full image once pieced together. The other way to go about this is to choose the image you would like in the space, purchase a high res print of this and have a local company print this for you. Thereafter we come in and hang it just like wallpaper, would you look at that, easy as pie!

Now to get to the fun part, designs and different styles in all their glory.

Florals:

If you are right and ready to go bold and not opposed to a floral feature, these are for you! I love the dark background of these prints, they really do make a statement. Keep in mind that the whole room does not need to be dark. This can be a great way to tie in some darker furniture you may already have in the space.

Prefer something a little more understated? No problem, here are some beautiful floral murals that are little more gentle on the eye. Note the white background creates a completely different style to the above images. Still just as effective in making the space really pop!

Botanical:

Not wild on flowers, here are some botanical pieces that are just as beautiful. Tip – bring in some real plants to create a bit of depth and dimension.

Watercolour:

The watercolour look is bang on trend at the moment! This is a great way to add a subtle pop of colour or feature in your home if minimalistic is more your style. In the right environment less can say more.

Nursery:

Should you be a little apprehensive to turn an entire wall in your living room into a statement piece, why not start small. A nursery is a great place for a mural, there are such fun and whimsical designs that you can incorporate into your little ones space. That he/she will love everyday.

TIPS ON ART, MAKE IT WORK

Choosing and hanging art can be a daunting task and some questions that may immediately come to mind are; do the frames need to match? Does the art need to be similar? Do I need to hang them in a straight row? Where’s my level, do I even have a level??? (Insert panic attack and consequently putting off this project for another month)

Take a few deep breaths, step back and let me walk you through this, it’s not as hard as you may think.

Step 1 – Choosing your artwork:

This is the time to be a little carefree. Choose pieces that speak to you and catch your eye. This can be anything really; a beautiful landscape or portrait, an abstract painting or even photos of your family and loved ones. Choose pieces that you will want to appreciate every day when you see them in your space.

Here are some images of my favourite artist and her incredible watercolor paintings. An absolute dream of mine would be to have an original Agnes Cecile hanging in my home, a girl can dream!

Step 2 – Framing:

The frames don’t really need to match, you can have a real liquirice all sorts if that’s speaks true of your style.

Try a combination of paintings, photographs and quotes. This is a great way to add interest and also a way of introducing the different tones that tie in with your current decor.

But if you are a perfectionist then perhaps all one colour would be best.

   .

If they are all canvasses, even better, no frames required!

Step 3 – Some tips on hanging:

  • images can be hung in different ways and various areas of the home. Be it a blank wall, down a staircase or above a desk, sofa or server. You could even do a gallery wall down a passage. The options are endless.
  • there are also different ways to hang art. You can have them mounted to the wall, hanging from the dado rails or even sitting on a thin shelf.

  • a tip for playing around with placement. Cut a piece of paper to the size of each of your pieces, simply paste these to the wall with tape or prestic. This way you can move them around to the layout you want without drilling holes.
  • remember art is not limited to framed paintings. Be adventurous and add some artistic sculptures into the mix to create a feature.

I hope this this has helped and most of all left you feeling inspired to hang up all those beautiful art pieces you have been collecting rather than let them collect dust any longer.

CORPORATE CONCEPTS

Today I am sharing with you a concept mood board Kirsty Badenhorst Interiors put together for a corporate project. The brief was to create a modern space full of interest. We incorporated a lot of natural elements like timber and marble while having the intention of introducing the company colours being red and dark grey.

.
Reception:

For the reception we wanted to create a warm and inviting environment so we introduced timber elements and interesting lighting ideas. It was important that the space be a showstopper as a lot of international clients would be waiting in this space.

.
Office Spaces:

The office spaces required a good combination of style and functionality, something we strive to achieve in all our designs. The company wanted an open space so we encouraged glass partitioning to create that open plan feel.

.
Social Areas:

For the social areas in this office, we were asked to create a space that was open to clients to view so it needed to tie in seamlessly with the rest of the building. The company was socially active and encouraged group work so we brought in “work pod stations” for this function.

.

General interiors:

The idea for the office space was firstly a combination of timber, dark grey and white. Secondly we would introduce the same red of the company logo into the design. So while creating a smart office, most of all we are creating an environment staying true to the brand.

High-Up City Living

Kirsty Badenhorst Interiors was hired to transform this tiny apartment into a more functional space. The apartment was entirely gutted in order to provide a blank canvas for Kirsty and her team. The look of the space was to be contemporary and modern.

.

Neutral tones have been used throughout the design. Rich browns and creams are featured throughout the design. The walls were painted in lighter tones to make the space feel more open and airy. The floors in the living spaces were carpeted to provide comfort. The kitchen was designed to be contemporary, therefore, smooth surfaces were used. Caesarstone was used for the countertops, and smooth, dark cabinetry to provide a contrast.

.

The curtain tracks and curtains were custom designed to block out the bright city lights when needed. The furniture made use of soft, grey fabric, and subtle blue patterns. The bedrooms were also designed to be clutter free and relaxing. The space was transformed into a tranquil space for the client and their family to relax in.
