About the Space

Dark, dingy and tight could be a few of the words used to describe this attic space before we renovated it. Light, bright and welcoming could be a few of the words used to describe the attic now. Space and ceiling constraints were two of the biggest issues faced when redesigning this space. We decided to wallpaper the ceiling with shiplap-like wallpaper. Furthermore, vertical lines on the paper help draw your eyes up, making the space feel larger and higher.

.

We added in a timber desk and cabinetry that would face out the door, at the magnificent view. This way, you would not feel constrained when working with a ceiling right above your head. We added in warm tones and textures, making the attic feel more welcoming and homey. Additionally, a roof light was also added to bring in some more natural light, and help any hot, trapped air escape, keeping it cool.

.

Our client now has access to an extra room in a house. One that was before, not being utilised. Therefore, this is one of the reasons we love doing our job. We get to help people unlock the real potential of their homes. “The details are not the details. They make the design.” – Charles Eames

About the Space

We were called in to redecorate a playroom for some lovely grandchildren. They had so many toys, but no space of their own to keep them at Granny’s house. The room was used as a spare bedroom, and occasional playroom. As a result, the client decided that it should be transformed into a full playroom, just for the children to have their very own special room. We added in some custom boxes to help store toys and decor items. The toys needed to be easy to reach for the little ones!

.

The paint colours were very outdated, as well as the curtains. Therefore we swapped out the curtains for some new fabric blinds, and painted the walls to become more modern. A neutral wallpaper was added to create some texture and interest. All that was left to do was to bring in some new furniture and decor items. Then for the fun part: organising all the toys!

Choosing the Right Window Dressing

Choosing The Right Window Dressing

Choosing The Right Window Dressing

Curtains

Choosing the right window dressing for your windows can often seem like a very scary task to do. This post will inform you about three different window dressing types, as well as their placements. Don’t worry! We have you covered at Kirsty Badenhorst Interiors.

.

First on our list, we have curtains. Curtains come in many different shapes and forms. In the following images, you will see the following: Double curtain track, single curtain track, eyelet curtain, and a recessed curtain track. The one you chose will depend on the application. For example, if you are wanting to make a room darker, you will install a double curtain track with blockout and a sheer. On a new build or renovation, you will have an option to have a recessed curtain track in the ceiling so you won’t see any hardware.

Shutters

Shutters can be on the pricier side of the dressings, however, they make such an impact. Easy to open and close, shutters are perfect for those who don’t enjoy struggling to close curtains every evening. Another great thing about shutters is that you can also get security shutters, which is so helpful in the world we live in today.

.

Shutters come in various finishes and colours, so there should always be one to suit your space. Sometimes, you could always add curtains to either side of the window to soften the space. Shutters are also a great addition to a bathroom, where curtains don’t always work.

Blinds

Blinds too, come in many different shapes and forms. The following images contain fabric, synthetic and natural blinds. Blinds can also be paired with a set of curtains to soften the space. You could always add a set of ‘dummy’ curtains, which won’t actually open and close.

.

Blinds come o=in sheer, as well as blockout so you can choose the right one for your space. Bedrooms will often make use of blockout, to keep out that sun from shining in your eyes too early in the morning. Natural blinds can also add beautiful texture to your space.

Storage

Creating A Dream Home Office

Creating A Dream Home Office

The Desk

Right now in the world, so many of us are forced to work from home, and others already have home offices established. An office needs to comprise of various factors that aid in making it a comfortable and productive space. It is our job as designers to ensure that we design spaces with beauty and function.

.

The first major factor of a home office is the desk space. Whether you work alone, or in a team, you need to have the right desk. You can either choose a desk with internal storage, or one without, and have other storage methods. You need to find a desk that suits your spacial needs and constraints. When placing your desk, try and maximise your space by either placing the desk in the centre of the room, or facing a wall. You can either have a freestanding or built in desk, depending on your needs and space.

Seating

When choosing an office chair, the most import tip we can mention is to TRY IT FIRST. While online shopping is very helpful, you have no way of finding out if you will find the chair comfortable, and any other specs you are looking for. There are various office chairs on the market, including stationary, swivel and moving, or stationery swivels. Choose one depending on your needs and wants.

.

The second form of seating in a home office is the general seating. This could take the form of a sofa, recliner or occasional chair. It is important to have a comfortable place to sit and relax when you need a break. It can also be helpful to stay in the same room when having a short break, instead of getting distracted elsewhere in the house.

Storage

Storage is OH-SO-IMPORTANT in a home office. Clutter is a major deterrent to productivity. Therefore, you need to have clever storage in a home office. Somewhere to organise and hide things away from sight until needed.

.

Whether or not you have the space for built in storage, we have compiled a few clever ways to store your items. This can take the form of shelves, cupboards and drawers. Remember to have places to store electronics such as printers. A helpful tip is to have a drawer with place for a charger cable. This way, you can charge your electronic devices without them being in the way, and something to distract you.

About the Space

One of our latest projects: “Hillside Home’ was recently featured in the Home Owner magazine. The feature displays images of several different rooms in the home. We were approached by the client to design, renovate and decorate their home. We worked with pieces of furniture that they already owned, as well as bringing in new items and decor pieces.

.

The whole family are in love with their home, but have their favourites. “I love my room the most. I look forward to going to bed every day,” says the mom of the home, while for the daughter her bedroom is her happy place. “My husband is crazy about the library. If you are looking for him, go to the library.”  – excerpt from the Home Owner article.

An excerpt from SA Home Owner’s website on our renovation:

“Situated in a small residential suburb in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, this home boasts a classic, serene ambience with a modern feel.

“Our home has splendid views from the top of the mountain, and the area has narrow roads, which means there are no speeding cars, making it safer for children too. The area has big plots, extremely low crime statistics and is generally peaceful,” says the owner.”

About the Space

Where to begin? From emails, to Skype calls, and flights across borders, this project was worth it in every way. Designing a space in a foreign country is quite the task, but us at KBI were up for the mission. The Seychelles is an incredibly stunning island above Madagascar, and to the right of Tanzania, Kenya and Somalia. (Just to help situate you on a map). They are a nation that LOVE colour! Therefore, this hotel had to be filled with vibrant colours. The trims of the rooms were painted a lime green, which made the rooms feel smaller. We swapped them out for a clean white, which helped brighten the room, and make them feel larger.

.

The colour came into play in the form of scatter cushions, artworks and various other accessories. The pale yellow paint on the walls was very outdated. Therefore, we painted the rooms more of a neutral tone. This helps tie together the bright and bold colours, without making your head spin. We opted to keep the existing furniture, such as the beds and sofas, as these are a part of this Seychelles hotel’s heritage, and would not feel the same without them.

Other Tips

Styling Your Space: Table Tops

Styling Your Space: Table Tops

Tray Styling

More times than often, the surfaces around our homes become a dumping ground for all sorts of clutter. In order for our spaces to feel more relaxing, we should always try to clear our surrounding surfaces, and organise our belongings. This can be done, whilst adding decor pieces and styling them to create a beautiful space.

.

Trays are always helpful when organising decor pieces, and other necessary items. They are often a staple item in homes, restaurants and even offices. The way we use trays has changed a lot over the years. They are now mostly used to store items, rather than serve off them. This means that they can now be beautiful and functional. Here are a few examples of trays on table tops, and how to style them.

Arranging Vases

Many of us fall victim to storing our vases away in cupboard, never to see the light of day (until a fresh bunch of flowers come along). This should not be the case. Vases are often crucial in a design, as they help fill up voids, and draw attention to the room.

.

When styling vases, we can often follow the rule of thirds. This is a simple, yet effective trick to help when placing items. Try and gather three vases, of three different shapes and sizes (tall, medium and short). You can now arrange them with the tallest at the back, the medium off to the side, and the small at the front. Place some real or faux plants in, and you have a beautiful display.

Other Styling Tips

There are so many different ways to style your table tops, and we would never be able to go over them all in this blog post. Here are a few helpful tips and ideas to work with when you next style your tables.

.

  • Try to combine various textures, but keeping them within a certain colour palette.
  • Use trinket boxes to store necessary, but not necessarily pretty items, such as keys, alarms and so forth.
  • When stacking books, place a decor item on top. This could be a sculpture, or wooden item to tie in with the rest of your decor.
  • Try to combine natural and synthetic objects together, to create an interesting, yet beautiful space.

Fully Mirrored Wall

Choosing the Right Mirror

Choosing the Right Mirror
Mirror Wall Design

Can we let you in on a secret? Mirrors are a secret weapon when it comes to design. They help bring in more light into the space, and make it feel larger than what it actually is. We love using mirrors in spaces, as they can help full up blank wall spaces, as well as adding to the decor.

.

When it comes to fully mirrored walls, the design possibilities are endless. From the shape of the mirrors, to the colour and style of the mirrors, almost anything is possible. Mirrored walls help make the room feel bigger and higher than it actually is. You could put a mirrored wall in just about any room, and it could work. Entrances are especially great places to have a mirror wall, and you can read more about why here.

Full Length Mirrors

Full length mirrors have recently become a craze, especially when snapping the perfect for Instagram. They also help elongate a room. A full length mirror can just about have any kind of frame, and the style would depend on your style.

.

The following images are of full length mirrors which have been placed on the floor. By placing decor or furniture in front of them, you can create a scene. They all have different frames, from natural wood, to ornate gold. There will be a style for your space, all we need to do is find it!

Mirror Gallery Wall

One of the more difficult styles to put together, a mirror gallery wall can help create interest and texture to a blank wall. Why I say it is difficult to put together, is because it is sometimes quite hard to find the perfect placement of each mirror.

.

Mirrored gallery walls are often used in farmhouse styled homes, but can be used in an array of homes/spaces. You could also style them by adding a few picture frames. You can read more about creating a gallery wall here.

Tables

Custom Furniture Design

Custom Furniture Design

Seating

“Seen that”, “boring”, and “too common” are NOT the words we should be using to describe furniture. Often, store bought furniture can become too over used, and chain sold. This is why custom furniture is a great option when it comes to furnishing your space.

.

First of all, we will be looking at seating. The possibilities are endless when it comes to custom furniture. There are so many different materials and fabrics to choose from. From leathers to velvets, cool tones to warm tones, patterns to plains, we know them all! Timbers and metals work so well with softer fabrics, and can be shaped into so many different forms. The following images are all examples of different seating options. We can’t choose which one we like best!

Tables

Do you battle to find a table that caters to a lot of guests? We certainly do! This is why custom – is often best. Tailored to your needs, a table can be made to suit your every wish.

.

More times than often, store bought tables can be uncomfortable to sit at, and plain to the eye. When designing a table, we take into account comfort and practicality. Your spacial restrictions will also play a big part in the design, as this shapes the design itself. The following tables are all beautiful designs, filled with little details, which make them so different to others.

Other Noteworthy Styles

This was such a hard category to put together, as I have mentioned before, there are SO MANY options out there. They are all begging to be made up! There are bed frames, head boards, storage units and other designs that do not have to be left plain and simple.

.

We love playing with colour, which is why there are a few designs that are rather colourful indeed. Another great part about custom made furniture, is that is can be locally made. This is better than buying from certain shops, as some mass import from other countries. By supporting local, you are helping designers all across South Africa to showcase their work.

About the Space

Lighting constraints was the biggest challenge in this renovation, as there was one tiny window in the TV lounge. The walls had to be light to mimic the brightness. The wallpaper we chose has beautiful gold, shimmery details in it, which help reflect the light around the room. This also adds detailing to the large, flat walls. We added in a comfy couch to laze around and watch the telly, along with coffee tables to store the remotes.

.

There was a corner that was not being utilised, so we added in a custom built ottoman and commissioned artwork for added seating. What a stunning little corner to lounge and read a book in. Scatter cushions, throws and a rug were added to bring in more comfort into the space.
