It was vital that we managed to tie the living space together, as it felt disconnected from the rest of the home.

About the Space

Upon entering this living room, you were greeted with an echoey clip clop sound… Not an entertainer’s paradise. That is because the entire space was tiled from wall to wall. In order to make the room feel more homely and less sterile, we opted to add in a rug. Not only did this help with sound absorption, but it quickly elevated the space from dull to luxurious. An important aspect of interior design and decorating is to include a variety of textures in the space. In addition to blankets, pillows and furnishings, rugs are another essential home accessory. We have an entire blog post dedicated to rugs. If you would like to know more about the in’s and out’s of using rugs in your space, click here.

.

If you look at the before images of this living room, you will find that there was not much colour, and the space felt empty. Colour can greatly impact the feel of a space. For example, cool tones such as blues, greens, purples, etc. generally create a calm and relaxing atmosphere. We added in various hues of blue within the rug, ottomans and decor accessories. We included different mixed metals such as matte black accessories, as well as metallic silver finishings. Although different metals, they work well to tie the space together. Overall, a once sterile and clinical space transformed into a relaxing and calming family room: An entertainer’s dream living space.

About the Space

The word “lifeless” might come to mind when looking at the before images of this entrance and foyer. But that was before we got our hands on it. This entrance and foyer was lacking life and colour, but we managed to turn that around during this renovation. It is generally known that darker paint colours tend to make rooms see smaller than they are, while lighter colours make rooms seem bigger than what they actually. The same goes for different types of wallpapers in which certain ones may make a room seem smaller, whereas others make a room seem bigger. To some, a patterned wallpaper can seem like a huge risk, but they can really add a ton of character and personality to a space. This double volume space was perfect for a patterned, vertically striped wallpaper.

.

As you may know by reading our previous blog posts and seeing our previous work… We LOVE to use greenery indoors. We actually have a whole blog post dedicated to it! If you would like to read more about that, click here. We added some potted plants to add some greenery and bring life into the space. The piano fitted perfectly into the space and will provide for hours of music and fun. The music will carry beautifully up into the double volume space. We decorated the upstairs landing and foyer with a light wood dark table. This was finished off with an array of hand picked vases, greenery and a lantern. Not only is the lantern beautiful, but will also help with the pesky ‘load shedding!’ Our clients are greeted with an entrance and landing that will always make them smile, and feel instantly relaxed.

About the Space

When we first walked into this beach apartment, we were met with a small, cramped space lacking life. It felt very dark, cramped and dated. We knew that we were in for a tricky renovation. Having to maximise the space we had, whilst making it brighter, more calming and aesthetically pleasing. The beach facing apartment had a beautiful sea breeze flowing through the space. We started by repainting the entire apartment from walls to ceilings. The new blue-grey colour brightened up the space and instantly made it feel better. We swapped out the old ceiling fans for new modern fixtures. We designed a new TV station that would bring in natural timber into the space.

.

Additionally, we brought in a new L-shaped sofa and timber coffee table. Underneath the staircase we chose to add in a Moroccan inspired table to add a beach vibe. A new dining table was brought in, and a custom bench seat installed. In terms of accessories, we had a blast! We chose some fun pieces for the dining table, including gold palm candlesticks and printed napkins. Overall, this living space went from drab to fab! It became brighter, more calming and a lot more pleasing to the eye.

About the Space

Here at Kirsty Badenhorst Interiors, we love to redesign kitchens. We love to create the perfect layout with tons of storage space for our clients. This kitchen was a lovely size, however, it was divided up with islands, walls and doors to a separate scullery. We opted to take down the walls and make the kitchen larger. The cupboards were in good condition, however they had to be redone in order to accommodate the new space. We added in new stone tops which made the space feel a lot more modern. Additionally, we opted for new hardware, sinks and plumbing fixtures.

.

We created a feature out of the kitchen island, which we had grey doors installed to add contrast. The island was quite small in the original kitchen. Therefore we created a much larger island with seating to help with a growing family. In addition to the grey doors, we installed a timber top with acts as another work surface, or island with bar seating. The timber ties in beautifully with the new woven pendants we had installed above the island. These create a lovely mood, and provide additional lighting to the space. Like the other rooms in the house, we had brand new oak flooring installed, and the walls painted. This instantly helped to brighten up the space, and give it life.

Dress Your Bed - Scatter Cushions

Dress Your Bed

Dress Your Bed

Duvets & Sheeting

They say that the right way to start your day is by making your bed. Today we will go over the different parts needed to dress your bed. Sheets are a very important part of dressing your bed. Sheets are part of the key for a good night’s sleep. They help provide comfort, warmth, and can help keep your duvet and mattress cleaner for longer.

.

There are two types of sheets, namely: fitted sheets and flat sheets. The fitted sheet goes around the mattress, preferably on top of a mattress protector. Additionally, a flat sheet goes on top, and this is what you normally sleep under. The quality and brand depends on your wishes, but we generally prefer to go for what is known as a higher thread count for clients. Your sheeting can be any colour, in order to match your duvet or contrast it.

.

The duvet cover is placed around your duvet inner, and can be plain or patterned. White duvets go with just about any room style, and provide a look of comfort and elegance. Some prefer to go with darker duvet colours, but this will just depend on your lifestyle, and room style.

Pillows and Scatters

Pillows are incredibly important when it comes time to dress your bed. According to Spine Health, “Having the right bed pillows is not only comforting, they play an important role in supporting the intricate structures of the head, neck, shoulders, hips, and spine. When used well, pillows help in alleviating or preventing many common forms of back and neck pain, as well as shoulder, hip, and other forms of joint pain.”

.

Scatter cushions are used mainly for decor, not for sleeping on. Therefore, this means that you can go all out in terms of design and style. We often like to layer different patterns and colours, bringing interest to the bed and bedroom. Introducing a scatter with texture, such as knots, bobbles or fur can help liven the space, and make it feel comforting, cozy and inviting.

Throws & Blankets

Throws and blankets do what a scarf would do to your outfit. Therefore they can help bring the bed together, and make it look cozy and comfortable. Throws help increase the life of a duvet, as they can protect it from dirty feet or pet hair.

.

By adding a throw onto the end of your bed, you can help introduce or tie in a colour, and this can be swapped out easily. Thus meaning that throws can be changed depending on the season. Thicker fabrics like faux fur or large knits can be used in winter. Furthermore, thinner fabrics like cotton or thin knits can be used in summer. It is often nice to have an extra layer, just incase you are in need of some more warmth.

Would you like your bed to stand out above the rest?

City Living by the Sea

CITY LIVING BY THE SEA

This project was completely different and unique from the projects we had done in the past. The brief was to create an ultra-modern, futuristic apartment with a sea view.

The apartment was to consist primarily of black and white. The design intended was to recreate a high-end, modern yacht.

.

The materials used throughout the home were to be high gloss and very unique therefore the kitchen consisted of high gloss black cabinetry, with white caesarstone countertops.

The cabinetry doors were fitted with touch-caps, therefore, handles were not used for the many of the doors.

.

White, wave textured wallpaper was used on the entire length of the entrance wall, through to the end of the apartment. As a result creating a different texture from a plain paint texture.

All the cabinetry in the apartment was custom designed and fitted, with excellent quality being used throughout.
